KUCHING: The International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which was yesterday, is a day for all as disabilities are part of the human conditions, said Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The Local Government and Housing Minister said over 35,000 persons with disabilities are registered with the Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKMS).

“Many are also affected by the (Covid-19) pandemic,” he said in a Facebook post today.

“Thankfully, financial aid has been given under the Sarawakku Sayang Special Assistance (BKSS) initiative as well as through JKMS,” he said.

The minister noted that the monthly welfare assistance for the disabled had been increased.

Citing information from the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Sim said one out of every seven people in the world experienced some form of disability, be it related to hearing, mobility or others.

Information on welfare support can be found at JKMS’ website, https://welfare.sarawak.gov.my/.
