MIRI: A total of 21,418 road accident cases were reported in Sarawak throughout 2023, with 378 of them resulting in fatalities.

Of these fatal accidents, 198 involved motorcyclists, underscoring the ongoing risks faced by road users in the state.

These statistics were highlighted by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin during the closing ceremony of the MyLesen B2 (Madani) Programme and the “Randau” Digitalisation of the Road Transport Department (RTD) Miri Division 2024 held at South Lake Permyjaya Hall on Saturday.

“I urge all road users, especially participants of this programme, to exercise utmost caution on the road. Apply the knowledge gained from this programme as a guide to prioritise safety at all times,” said Lee, emphasising the importance of responsible road behavior to reduce accidents.

The MyLesen B2 (Madani) Programme, aimed at helping individuals from the B40 or low-income group obtain motorcycle licenses, is part of the government’s efforts to improve socio-economic conditions. By equipping participants with licenses, the programme creates opportunities for employment in sectors like logistics and transportation.

“As of now, 2,162 candidates across Sarawak have successfully completed the programme,” Lee noted.

He added that this initiative not only enhances road safety but also opens pathways for economic growth for many families.

Lee also called for stronger collaboration between enforcement agencies, including the police, RTD and Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (LPKP).

He stressed the importance of bolstering enforcement mechanisms to reduce road accidents, particularly fatal ones, aligning with the government’s vision of halving road accident deaths by 2030.

“Efforts to improve road safety will only succeed with the cooperation of all parties, including road users themselves. I hope beneficiaries of this programme will set an example for others by embodying responsible and safe driving practices,” Lee concluded.

Also present were acting Miri Resident Juan Ubit and Sarawak JPJ director Norizan Jili.
