KUCHING: Approximately 395 medical doctors who were offered permanent positions in Sarawak have officially begun their roles, according to Deputy Health Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni.
These numbers represent a portion of the 619 doctors who were presented with the opportunity to work in government hospitals and health clinics within the state.
Among the figures, Lukanisman noted that 55 doctors are already on duty but continue their studies, a move that has been approved by the Ministry of Health (MOH).
Additionally, 49 doctors have accepted the positions but have requested a delayed start due to personal circumstances.
Speaking during a press conference following his visit to the Siburan Health Clinic yesterday, Lukanisman highlighted that 50 doctors declined the offer for permanent roles and postings in Sarawak.
Furthermore, there are 70 medical officers who are yet to confirm their acceptance or rejection of the offer, a matter under close observation by the Sarawak State Health Department.
Lukanisman acknowledged the complexity of factors influencing medical officers’ decisions. Despite the presence of quality clinics and hospitals in rural areas, accommodation might pose a challenge for some. He called on the doctors to initiate their duties first, followed by the possibility of applying for transfers to different facilities.
He emphasized that while issues arise, the state’s healthcare system has been a long-standing concern and the current efforts are part of a continual process.
Lukanisman also revealed that similar issues are faced in other regions, such as Terengganu and Melaka, despite having sufficient facilities.
Concluding on a positive note, Lukanisman expressed his satisfaction with the feedback received from 17 medical doctors who were offered permanent positions and subsequently transferred to Serian Hospital. This exchange of insights is expected to contribute to ongoing improvements in the state’s healthcare sector.
