SIBU: About 400 persons participated in a gotong-royong programme to spruce up the century-old Al-Qadim Muslim Cemetery here yesterday.
According to spokesman Effendy Aziz, in addition to the local Muslims, the staff of several government agencies also took part in the programme.
“The programme which began at 7am was inaugurated by Malay-Melanau paramount leader Temenggong Datuk Wan Hamid Edruce.
“It is an initiative of the Standing Committee for the Islamic Festival under the Sibu Resident’s Office in collaboration with the Sibu Islamic Welfare Trust Board (LAKIS),” he said.
Wan Hamid launched the gotong-royong by planting a sapling near the cemetery.
