SIBU: Acting in response to information received from a concerned netizen followed by confirmation from a police source, a joint enforcement team compr ising officers from the Sibu Regional Office of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and the Kanowit Police Station raided a location at Nanga Dap, Kanowit and detained a total of 442 logs as well as five suspects and two longboats last Sunday.
“The joint SFC-Police team had, during the late afternoon of 29 October 2017, first come upon 401 unattended logs that had been rafted and ‘anchored’ off the bank at Nanga Dap, apparently ready to be towed to another destination.
Subsequently after a wait of five hours, five suspects in two longboats were nabbed trying to remove a further 41 rafted logs from the vicinity of the raid.
“The suspects were unable to produce any document to prove legal ownership of the logs. Additionally, the logs did not bear any official markings and were therefore believed to have been illegally extracted,” said a statement issued by SFC yesterday.
Police report on the operation was lodged at the Kanowit Police Station and the case was handed over to the relevant authority for further investigation.
