KAPIT: A total of 47 people, comprising 33 dormitory students and 14 teachers and school staff, were evacuated to higher grounds following flash floods at SK Nanga Bena, Sungai Sut early this morning (Aug 22).

The flash floods that struck SK Nanga Bena caused several buildings and school dormitory to be submerged under roof-level waters.

Bomba photo shows the evacuation works being carried out by Kapit firefighters.

Kapit fire station chief Timothy Barat said that his firefighters were dispatched to the scene, about 33km away, after receiving an emergency call at 3.42 am.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

“A total of 47 victims, comprising 33 dormitory students and 14 teachers and school staff, were swiftly evacuated to a higher and safer place in the area using several longboats provided by the local folk nearby.

“The floodwaters rose alarmingly, reaching roof height, and it prompted the authorities to act quickly,” he said.

All of the victims returned to their respective homes following the evacuation.

The rescue operation ended at 6.45 am once the area was deemed safe from any harm.
