KUCHING: Sarawak Customs Department held a simple handing-over ceremony where donations were presented to senior citizens around Bau in conjunction with the coming Hari Gawai celebration at Kampung Peninjau Lama, in Bau last Sunday.
According to its director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha in a statement yesterday, the programme was a platform for the state Customs to reach out to the community for the establishment of a closer rapport.
“Indeed, good communication between the department and the community can help us (Customs) to eradicate criminal activities such as smuggling and thus helping to form a law-abiding society.
“In addition, this event is a proof that the department is concerned about those in need,” she added.
At the event, 50 recipients received donations in the forms of cash and daily necessities.
Organised by the Sarawak Customs Women’s Association (Pewakas) and the Malaysian Customs Sports and Cultural Council (Mskkm) Sarawak branch in collaboration with Serembu Service Centre, this event was graced by Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh who officiated at the ceremony.
