KAPIT: Five hundred people attended a Holy Thursday mass at St Mary Immaculate Conception here.

The highlight of the mass was a ‘Washing Of The Feet’ ceremony.

The mass was celebrated by Father Matthews Olili who said “the ‘Washing of The Feet’ ceremony teaches us to be humble to serve others no matter what status we are in the society.

“Whether we are top government officers, political leaders or religious heads we need to be humble to serve the people” he said.

The Holy Thursday mass is part of an Easter celebration for Catholics to remind them of the intense sufferings of Jesus Christ prior to his crucifixion on Good Friday.

Present at the mass were Brother Blaise and Brother Glenn, parish council chairman Dewis Lidek, catechists Kenneth Kanyan and Edward Antas, Marian Guild chairperson Angelyana Lee Pui Lan, Chinese pastoral committee chairperson Betty Wong, parish council and members of Marian guilds.

On early Friday morning, a Station Of The Cross ceremony was held where a group of youths of the church performs a sketch that narrated the sufferings of Jesus (from the instant Pontius Pilate ordered Jesus to be crucified to the moment Jesus was crucified at Mount Calvary).

At 3.00 pm the church held Good Friday mass for the Celebration of The Lord’s Passion with the Liturgy of the Word, followed by a Veneration Of The Cross.

The Easter celebration will continue today (Saturday) with a Holy Saturday Easter Vigil mass at 7.00 pm with the highlight of the celebration, being the Lighting of the Candle, followed by a mass.

Meanwhile tomorrow, (Sunday) the faithful will celebrate an Easter Sunday mass.
