KOTA SAMARAHAN: Sarawak requires about 500 experts in engineering, mathematics, computer science and software engineering to be a developed state by 2030.

Premier and pro-chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said more skilled personnel are needed in professional fields to achieve the aspirations of the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

“With the availability of highly trained and skilled workforce in such fields, Sarawak will have human resources with high potential.

“Consequently, it can drive economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development of the state,” he said in his speech during the UNIMAS 27th Convocation Ceremony at DeTAR PUTRA here, today.

The latest developments that are happening or will happen in this state require the active involvement of all parties, especially UNIMAS, he said.

“UNIMAS is seen as having the potential to be the main catalyst in advancing the state’s economy, thereby improving the well-being of the community in this beloved Land of Hornbills,” he said.

In addition, Abang Johari expressed confidence that UNIMAS has equipped its graduates with knowledge and skills relevant to current developments.

“Therefore, we hope that students can apply the knowledge and skills they have to advance their families, communities and the country.

“We also hope that this significant contribution will help the government’s efforts to make Sarawak a developed state by 2030,” he stressed.

Accordingly, the Premier also reassured his offer of free education to students of higher institutions starting from 2026.

“I believe, through investment in education and skills development, Sarawak is building a foundation for a brighter future.

“Therefore, UNIMAS has to play an important role in ensuring that these aspirations and dreams can be achieved, especially through contributions in education and research,” he said.

Also present were UNIMAS vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Kadim Suaidi and UNIMAS board of directors chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Sulong Matjeraie.
