KUCHING: About 500 participants took part in the Breakthrough Network Charity Run held in conjunction with Malaysia Day.

Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the event is looking to raise RM100,000 to help the education of children from poor families.

“Everybody plays their role and does their part. This is why we see that a society cannot progress without caring and loving hearts. We’re not only focused on making money but also on considering how others feel and suffer, and extending our help,” he said.

“I encourage the public to participate in any way they can, not just with this association but with any initiative,” Wee said when met.

The mayor said Kuching is striving towards being a healthy and smart city by 2030, integrating other aspects such as environmental and happiness aside from economy.

“Our goal is to see an increase in the happiness index in Sarawak. It’s not just about being strong but also ensuring that everyone is happy,” he said.

Meanwhile, the management of Breakthrough Network thanked the Li An Group for its support in providing them with a location for its new education centre in Pine Square, Batu Kawa.

The non-profit organisation currently has 3 education centres – 2 at Stutong Baru and another at Pine Square. Established 16 years ago, the organisation provides free tutoring to children from poor families as well as providing food assistance.

The participants warmed up for the run with a Zumba session.
