SIBU: About 500 residents in Nanga Dangih, Pakoh, Oya in Selangau are affected by the floods which cut off a section of road leading to the area on Friday.
When contacted yesterday, Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira said there was no latest information from the authorities on the ground but believed that the affected section of the road still remained impassable to vehicles.
“River transport along Batang Oya is the only alternative for affected residents,” he said.
“There is no evacuation so far as no evacuation centre has been activated in Selangau.
“However, if the need arises, three evacuation centres can be activated any time, at Selangau multipurpose hall, SK Tong Ah and the multipurpose hall in Sekuau.
“We are working closely with the relevant agencies,” he added.
Two schools were affected by the floods on Friday, namely SK Ulu Pakoh and SK Nanga Kua.
According to the Selangau District Education Office’s report, at SK St Matthew, the water was two feet high as at 5.30pm on Friday.
No pupils were affected as it was still the school holidays.
Meanwhile, Tabalog Road and Nanga Tamin are impassable by all types of vehicles as of 2pm yesterday.
However, the residents of the area are not cut off as they have alternative roads through Batang Oya to reach Stapang Town.
A source from the Sibu Civil Defence Force (APM) quoted Sibu Resident Charles Siaw as saying the water was about one-foot high in low lying areas.
According to Siaw, longhouses and residents by the banks of Batang Oya River are not affected by the flood as yet.
