MIRI: A fire at the remote settlement of Ba’ Abang in Long Sepatai, Baram which swept through a 12-door longhouse on Sunday (Nov 3) has left 54 people homeless.

According to Sarawak’s Fire and Rescue Department, the blaze erupted around 4 pm when almost all of the residents attended a nearby church service.

The fire self- extinguished after 30 minutes, but by then, all 12 units had been completely destroyed.

Emergency services from the Marudi Fire Station were alerted later that night, receiving a call around 9:56 pm.

Due to the challenging terrains, reaching the scene requires six to seven hours drive by four-wheel-drive vehicle from the nearest fire station in Marudi.

No injuries were reported, though the destruction has left families without shelter.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
