ZAGREB: Six people were killed and four others wounded in a shooting at the Home for the Elderly and Infirm in Daruvar, eastern Croatia, on Monday, according to local police, reported Xinhua.

Police said the shooting occurred around 10.10 am local time when the suspect, a 51-year-old retired military policeman Kresimir Pahoki, entered the facility and opened fire, killing five people on the spot, including four elderly residents and a caregiver. A sixth person died later from injuries at the hospital.

Among the deceased was Pahoki’s mother, a resident of the nursing home.

After the attack, Pahoki reportedly walked to a nearby cafe, ordered a drink, and waited for the police to apprehend him, according to witnesses.

Croatian President Zoran Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic condemned the attack and extended their condolences to the victims’ families.

Milanovic wished the wounded a speedy recovery and praised the emergency medical services’ swift response. He also called for a “quick and thorough” investigation and enhanced weapon possession control.
