SARATOK: A 60-hour continuous poetry recital has got the names of 1,117 students and education staff from the district into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR).

The effort which began at 9pm on Thursday , officially ended at 9am yesterday.

It involved the participation of 53 primary schools, six secondary schools as well as members of the Saratok District Education Office (PPD) and the Council of Principals and Head Teachers (MPGB).

Saratok District Education Officer Anis Madeli said the mission was an effort to raise the spirit of education in the district.

“We want to make this record-breaking success a proof that we outside the city, in the Saratok District, are capable of doing what our friends do in better places.

“Though nearly 70 per cent of schools’ physical condition being poor, it was still not an obstacle for us to achieve this.

“Congratulations to all district educators who were directly or indirectly involved,” he said here, yesterday.

Even though he was only able to be at the Dewan Sri Semerbak of SMK Bahasa Malaysia on the last day, Anis said the aura was extraordinary.

“Educators successfully translated the concept of teamwork to a very high level.”

Meanwhile PPD Saratok Learning Sector Deputy Aiwan @ Noraini Alli revealed that the previous record was held by Selangor with a duration of 40 hours.

“We decided that instead of writing poetry, we should take on a more difficult challenge of reciting poetry for 60 hours continuously, non-stop.

“Finally at exactly 9am this morning, we successfully completed the 60-hour non-stop poetry programme, breaking the record in the MBR,” he said.
