60 veterinary officers involved in vaccination programme

KUCHING: 60 veterinary officers from the State and Federal Veterinary Departments were involved yesterday in the vaccination programme for dogs as part of the efforts to control the outbreak of rabies in the state.

According to Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Tan Kai, the vaccination programme was organised for the community within the 10 kilometre radius of Arang Road.

“Sarawak Veterinary Department has also prepared about 5,000 vaccines for the programme,” he added.

“Apart from that, we will also organise an awareness talk for the public to educate them on the rabies issues,” said Tan Kai when met by reporters during the Rabies Vaccination Programme held by the State Veterinary Department at the Taman Flora Basketball Court at Arang Road here yesterday.

Meanwhile, Miri Veterinary Officer, Dr Sylmie Al-Harir said that they were targeting about 4,500 dog to be vaccinated during the programme.

“We have 9 teams with 5 members in each team, and we are provided with 50 vials of vaccine which can provide 10 doses each.

“Apart from that, we are advising the dog owners on what they should do after vaccinating their pets,” said Sylmie.

She added that the state veterinary lab would also provide additional supplies of vaccines if there was a shortage during the programme.
