MIRI : The fourth Sarawakiana Carnival held by Pustaka Negeri Sarawak has attracted 6,000 visitors.

Held in collaboration with Miri City Council (MCC) as to commemorate Miri City’s 12th Anniversary and Miri May Fest 2017, the carnival was officially launched on 6 May by Miri City Mayor Adam Yii who represented Piasau State Assemblyman Dato’ Sebastian Ting.

The carnival, which aimed to create awareness and promote the cultures and heritage of Sarawak, was supported by the library’s smart partners including Natz Production Sdn. Bhd, Persatuan DohKayan Telang Usan (DKTU), Persatuan Jatti Meirek Miri, Persatuan Melayu Miri, Persatuan Melanau Miri, Persatuan Dayak Miri and Unimas.

One of the highlights was the ‘Bermukun’ competition which is held every time the carnival is held.

It attracted contestants from Labuan, Mukah as well as Brunei Darussalam, Sibuti and Miri.

‘Bermukun’ is the traditional Sarawak Malay metrical verses and lively dance.

It is a performance that is organized during special occasions such as weddings and gatherings.

This year, there are two categories, adult and youth (18 years old and below).

For the adult category, Gemersik Kedayan from Miri was the winner,  Selindang Sutera of Brunei Darussalam and Putera-Puteri Mukah were first and second runner-up respectively.

In the youth category, Miri’s Cabik Geronong was the winner, Cilik from Brunei Darussalam came in second and Miri-Brunei duo Dewa Dewi finished  third.

The first Sarawakiana Carnival in Miri City was held in 2011.
