MIRI : The 62nd SMK St Columba Annual Sports Meet was  held at Miri Open Stadium on Tuesday.

It was declared open by Telang Usan assemblyman  Dennis Ngau.

Speaking at the function, Dennis said the involvement of students in sports is very important because it forces them to be self disciplined.

He said was it not for the  discipline to train everyday, probably the students would not be able to represent their respective school houses in the championship and eventually other  higher level championships.

Dennis pointed out that possession of  this character of high discipline  brought a lot of benefits to a person specially students, therefore,  the reason why  self-discipline is the  factor that could be possessed by a person.

He said the factors of discipline has the following meanings  – determine, responsible,  orderly, cooperative, loyal, respect for leaders,  wise, law-abiding, self-control, obedient, patient and considerate.

In a survey of 10,000 successful persons in the world, Dennis said, 15% of success  is due to  technical  training and 85% is due to personality  and the primary  personality  trait identified as  attitude.

Positive attitude, he said, comes from self-discipline and having high discipline  will determine a person attitude. And the greatest day in a person life is when we take responsibility  of our attitude and the day they truly  grow up.

According to Dennis,  where success is measured  people are not  measure in inches or how much  money  they have or college degrees or family  background, instead they are measured by the  size of their thinking.

He said successful people all started by thinking big and how big we think determines the size of our accomplishment.

He also said the  progress of a society was often closely associated  with  the performance in the field of sports.

For example, he said,  Malaysia is now known by the world  because of the grandeur  of Datuk  Lee  Chong Wei in  badminton, Datuk Nicol David in the field of  Squash and Pendelela Renong in diving.
