KUCHING: Heavy rainfall on Saturday morning has led to the relocation of 156 families, totalling 682 flood victims, to the temporary relief centres (PPS) at Dewan Serbaguna Taman Malihah.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas disclosed that five PPS have been established here with one each in Lundu and Bau, and three within Kuching itself.
“The most severely affected area is Taman Malihah, where 156 families consisting of 682 individuals have been impacted by the flood,” he told reporters when visiting the PPS Taman Malihah here.
Uggah, who is also State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman, said prompt action was taken by the State and District Disaster Management Committees (JPBN/JPBD), along with the State Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) and Civil Defence Force (APM), to monitor the situation.
He said preparations for additional PPS and food centres are underway in anticipation of persistent rainfall to ensure timely assistance to potential flood victims.
“We have instructed all agencies to be prepared during this monsoon season. Food supplies are crucial, and we have prepackaged meals readily available for immediate distribution,” he said.
He also urged individuals hesitant to relocate to prioritise their safety as flood levels are unpredictable.
“Our priority is to ensure that no untoward incidents occur. We understand when we move, there may be discomfort, maybe fear that their homes will be left unguarded.
“As such, we have informed the police to monitor vacated areas and ensure the safety of all residents. We have enough coordination of committee machinery that is mobilised,” he said.
Also present were Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman and Sarawak BOMBA director Datuk Khirudin Drahman.
