SIBU: This district is likely to achieve 70 percent herd immunity against Covid-19 by the end of this month, said Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting.
He pointed this out after examining the data on the number of Sibu residents who were vaccinated by last Monday.
Ting said more than 60 percent of the 230,000 eligible Sibu residents had received their jabs.
This percentage showed that Sibu was getting closer to reaching the 70 percent herd immunity target set by international bodies.
“I hope more companies will encourage their employees to receive the vaccines as soon as possible.
This is very important in helping us to achieve the herd immunity so that we can reopen the economic sector which has been badly affected by the re-implementation of the movement control order (MCO).
“Besides, the vaccination of many people helps to reduce the number of Covid-19 positive cases in our country,” he added.
On the first phase of the Public-Private Partnership Covid-19 Industry Immunisation Programme (Pikas), conducted at the University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) industrial vaccination centre, the SMC chairman said the centre had vaccinated nearly 14,000 workers during a week of operation.
Meanwhile, Pansar Holdings Berhad’s managing director and organiser of the programme, Pemanca Datuk Jason Tai, said Pikas phase two would begin on July 19.
“A total of 3,667 workers will be vaccinated this Thursday and Friday.
“At the same time, we will also be mobilising the mobile unit in oil palm plantations around the town this week,” he added.
