KUCHING: About 700 beautiful lanterns in various sizes have been lit up along one of the oldest streets, namely Carpenter Street in the city in the spirit of the upcoming Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration.
Despite the much-muted CNY due to Covid-19 pandemic which prohibits large gatherings and visits, the Kuching Old Market Community Association has taken the initiative to put up the lanterns to usher in the New Year.
Association chairman Kapitan Lim Chuan Chan said the lights of the lanterns were put on last week on Feb 2.
“The lanterns will be on from 6pm to 7am and will be on throughout the year,” he said.
He hoped with the lighting up of Carpenter Street, it will add some brightness to a quiet celebration.
“We also pray that the pandemic will be over towards the end of this year so that our lives can return to normal,” said Lim.
CNY is just a few more days away which will be celebrated this Friday, Feb 12.
