KUCHING: This year’s Kuching Festival Fair has currently drawn in about 700,000 visitors.
This was revealed by Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg during a visit to the popular annual festival at MBKS here on Friday night.
“I would like to congratulate the Kuching City South Council (MBKS) for always successfully holding the Kuching Festival in conjunction with Kuching city’s anniversary.
“Judging by how many foreign visitors we have coming to this festival as well, this means that this is a festival that can attract many tourists to come to Kuching especially in August.
“I’ve been made to understand that there is a need to have a fixed month to promote the festival as to enable tourists to plan their trips in August.
“Then we have September whereby we have other activities like the Sarawak Regatta,” he said.
Johari who rode his big bike to the festival site impressed the festival site in Padungan impressed the Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian and MBKS Mayor Dato James Chan as well as other guests when he and his wife Datin Amar Dato Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang sat down together to enjoy other guests for a simple dinner sitting at joined tables facing each other in typical multiracial rapport and camaraderi.
“This is what Sarawak is all about, eating together in harmony regardless of race or religion. There is mutual respect for each
other,” the Chief Minister said.
Also present was Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth, and Sports Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
This year’s festival consists of 316 food stalls and 170 trade fair stalls.
