73 arrested for defying MCO

KUCHING: Police have arrested 73 individuals for defying the movement control order (MCO) from 8am on Thursday to 8am yesterday.

State Deputy Commissioner of Police Datuk Dev Kumar in a statement mentioned that Kuching recorded the most arrests with 30 offenders.

“This was followed by Miri with 15 arrests; Padawan (13); Sibu (four); Meradong (three); Kota Samarahan, Simunjan and Matu Daro (two); and one each in Limbang and Sarikei.

“The latest figure brings the tally of arrests made throughout Sarawak to 1,566 arrests since Mar 18,” he said.

Dev Kumar added that in the same period, 65 individuals were charged in court for flouting the order.

Those who are charged for the offence in Kuching are 18 people; followed by Kota Samarahan (14); Serian (11); Bau (10); Miri and Padawan (five); and two persons in Bintulu.

To date, the total of individuals charged in court stands at 997.

All offenders were detained under Section 186 of the Penal Code and Regulation 7(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within The Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020.
