KUCHING: 80 attended the ‘Link Development Camp’, organised by the Malaysian Red Crescent SJK Chung Hua No 5 and the Red Crescent Voluntary Aid Detachment of Batu Lintang Teachers Training College (IPG Batu Lintang) on Saturday.

Held at the school’s premises, the camp was held from 7am until 4pm and its objective was to empower individuals to take up an ethical leadership role in their communities through the ‘Youth As Agents of Behavioural Change’ (YABC) programme, as well as teaching them basic first aid.

The programme’s facilitators, Alvin Choo and Ha Yun Yi, used peer education to move learners out of their comfort zone, while at the same time, creating a safe and respectful environment where they are not told what to think or do, but to explore solutions together.

Learning comes from within and by exchanging with peers, the participants can develop their own position and commitment through critical reflection at a level of equality and trust.

Apart from that, participants were also taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bandaging, treatment of wounds, bone fracture and transportation of victims. Through this link development camp, the members have learnt how to tackle problems in case of emergency situations, which further strengthens not only what they do, but also how they do it.
