KUCHING: Nineteen food premises throughout the state were found to have violated the state’s labour ordinance.
This was discovered during a statewide operation launched by the State Labour Department on Friday night.
The department’s director Awang Raduan Awang Omar said during the operation 45 workplaces were inspected and 82 cases of various offences under the State Labour Law were recorded at 19 food premises.
He added that the special operation code-named “Ops Bistro”, which was launched simultaneously throughout the state, started from 8pm until 11pm on Friday.
It involved 41 enforcement personnel from 13 branch offices of the State Labour Department in the state.
“This special night operation focuses on workplaces in bistros, restaurants or food service activities,” he said.
The offences included employer failure to make available and keep personal list of employees (13 cases), prepare and keep a list of terms and conditions of employment (13 cases), prepare and keep payrolls and allowances (12 case) and giving notice of commencement of business (8 cases).
In addition, Awang Raduan said one investigation paper was opened to probe an offence under Section 119 of the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (Chapter 76) involving employment of non-resident workers without a licence.
He also said the State Labour Department would continue with the special operations at workplaces in other sectors to ensure full compliance with the labour laws and to ensure the rights of workers under the laws are protected.
