MIRI: Miri Division recorded a total of 871 road accidents from January to March this year.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said that out of the total number of road accidents, 15 were fatal.
“I was informed by the police that six fatal accidents occurred on the Miri-Bintulu Road. The rest occurred on the Coastal Road and other roads around the city here,” he said when met by reporters after launching the Road Safety Campaign in the Miri Division today in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration here.
Lee also revealed the causes of the road accidents.
“These included negligence and carelessness of the drivers themselves, an increase in the number of vehicles on the road, and weather, road and terrain factors.
“Realising this, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) has implemented campaigns like this to emphasise the safety of road users, especially during festive seasons.
“The government also ensures that road users are always educated about the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and safe driving at all times,” he explained.
The minister also advised all road users to observe safety precautions when travelling back to their hometowns.
He said these included using safety equipment such as approved helmets for motorcyclists and in the case of car drivers, always fastening the seat belts.
