KUCHING: Sarawak secured a total of 95 business events in the year 2020, worth RM 208.8 million of economic spinoff despite the pressure from Covid-19 pandemic.
State Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Sarawak remained optimistic to receive at least 25,346 delegates coming to the state with an estimated RM112.9 million of total expenditure by direct delegates
“We estimate the delegates will spend their stays here in Sarawak for a total of 81,437 days. This will generate tax revenues amounting to RM 12.5 million plus 16,346 job placements,” he said after officiating at the Sarawak Tribal Gathering Kuching 2021 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
Pointing out that Sarawak had surpassed its initial target by 106 percent, he said the only way forward to regain competitive edge was to unite and work with other industry key players.
“A lot of pressure has been put on our business events industry since the pandemic hit the world. Our visitors and delegate arrivals are inevitably under pressure too.
“Therefore, this is why we need to collaborate as an industry to bring back the confidence of our organising planners and visitors,” the minister added.
