KUCHING: SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg has created a new record in Malaysia by building a giant replica of the national flag, Jalur Gemilang, using 9,800 egg trays.

Its Principal, Affida Helmi said that the building programme was in conjunction with the celebration for Malaysia Day 2018.

“We are building a giant replica of Jalur Gemilang with a size of 140 feet by 70 feet. It took us about two weeks to prepare the replica using egg trays that we have collected from our students, teachers, private sector workers and school’s alumni,” she explained, adding that a total of 116 students were involved in arranging the replica yesterday.

According to Affida, they initially planned to collect a total of 14,000 egg trays to build the replica. But in the end, they only managed to collect less than the amount mentioned.

“Besides building the Jalur Gemilang, we also used a total of 496 egg trays for a replica of our school name arranged by the teachers who will retire soon,” she said. She added that through the programme, it also created a sense of unity, cooperation and discipline among the students.

“The students and teachers are very hardworking and the effort enabled them to foster closer ties between each other as well as instilling patriotism,” said Affida during the launching of building giant Jalur Gemilang replica using egg tray at SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg in Petra Jaya here yesterday.

The school recorded a time of one hour and 25 minutes to finish building the giant replica.

The programme used a total of 476 litres of paint that comprised red, blue, white, yellow and green colours.

The painting process of the egg trays took about 56 hours while the students and teachers involved took about 6 hours to practise building the giant Jalur Gemilang replica.
