KUCHING: There are 1,350 inmates in the Puncak Borneo Prison and 10 percent of them are foreigners who have been jailed for various offences including overstaying, criminal offences as well as drug abuse.

State Prison director Ajidin Salleh told reporters this after the Collaboration Programme with Family at the Puncak Borneo Prison here yesterday.

He added that prisons in the state did not house any high profile individuals and that there were less than 200 women prisoners in Sarawak.

Ajidin also explained that the rehabilitation module dubbed ‘HUNT’ Module, (Help Yourself, No Suffer No Tear), which was explained by the programme advisor Mohamad Rosidek Musa, was for Malaysian inmates only.

Earlier on during the Collaboration Programme with Family, Mohamad said the module, initiated by the Prison Department of Malaysia to help drug offenders, was promising.

The module, which was implemented in stages, comprised 17 sessions with each session lasting 60 to 90 minutes.

“This time, a total of 120 drug offenders underwent the module to rehabilitate (treat and control drug addiction).

“The module is carried out twice a week and thrice a week for two months during the human resource development programme phase,” said Mohamad.

He added that the module involved psychopathy group therapy which was implemented during the final session to provide information and create acceptance by the ‘client’ (inmate) family.

“Today’s programme requires the support and understanding from the family in order for them (inmates)  not to be left out after completing their sentences,”he said.

Also present was Puncak Borneo prison director Hamdan Salleh Majin.
