ULU PADAWAN: The birih anggur (red grape) durian species only available in Kampung Assum here will be promoted for commercial production. 

Deputy State Secretary (Rural Transformation) Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik said the durian species already has its niche market due to its unique taste and soft flesh. 

“We will be working with the durian farm owner in Kampung Assum so that more of the birih anggur durian species can be planted through the Biya Association. 

“So, it is not impossible that one day we can produce local durians for the local and international markets,” he said. 

He told reporters this after visiting the durian farm in Kampung Assum, located 75 kilometres from Kuching yesterday.

Ik Pahon noted that Sarawak has a Durian Entrepreneur Association whose objectives include identifying durian species with special taste for commercial production. 

“Through the association we also promote modern agriculture by encouraging farmers to produce quality food products.

“And with the availability of road access to Kampung Assum, durian produce in this interior area can be transported to Kuching in a short time,” he said. 

“On the commercial level, most people only know the famous Musang King. 

“Therefore, we want to promote the local durians from Sarawak as they have the same soft texture as Musang King,” he said.
