KOTA SAMARAHAN: Police have successfully seized drugs worth RM1.5 million since early January.
Sarawak Police Commissioner CP Datuk Ramli Din said the drugs were confiscated as a result of arrests made in Miri and Kuching.
“At the start of 2020, we seized nine kilogrammes of syabu, 20,000 ecstasy pills worth RM1mil in Miri, and last Saturday, a raid on an entertainment centre in Kuching saw the arrests of 67 people who tested positive for drug abuse,” said Ramli.
“It (drug menace) does not even differentiate the group of people (abusers) since several professionals, including politicians, have been caught up in the cycle,” he said of the menace.
He was speaking at the Kota Samarahan Community Leaders Meeting here yesterday, adding that the police would also focus on commercial crime and gambling.
He noted that commercial crime statistics showed a decrease last year but the amount of losses suffered by victims shot up to RM120 mln (2019) from RM70 mln in 2018.
Ramli said discussions with leaders, especially the mayors, would be held to discuss improvements to their respective areas.
Other initiative was the establishment of a community meeting programme with the police on a monthly basis aimed at obtaining information on crime as well as sharing crime prevention methods.
Also present yesterday were Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Idris Buang, Sarawak Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief Supt Hasnir Abdul Hamid, Sadong Jaya assemblyman Aidel Lariwoo, Samarahan OCPD DSP Lee Chong Chern and Samarahan District Officer Anuar Da’an.
