KUALA LUMPUR: The spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) infection in the country is still under control with no case of human-to-human transmission recorded to date, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

She said the handling of the situation was also within the capabilities and capacity of the resources.

“According to the Ministry of Health (MOH), as of the afternoon of Feb 8 (yesterday), there was one new case of coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases in Malaysia to 16.

“MOH also said that there were no sporadic cases at different locations detected and to date, no death recorded in Malaysia,” she said in a statement today.

Dr Wan Azizah was commenting on the National Disaster Management Committee’s special meeting chaired by her yesterday. Among those present in the meeting were Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.

Elaborating further, she said good healthcare could help cure patients with coronavirus, citing examples of two from 16 positive cases who had been discharged after repeat tests for the 2019-nCoV showed negative results.

However, she said MOH would continue to monitor the latest situation of the infection based on information from the World Health Organisation, Asean countries and International Health Regulation (IHR) National Focal Point.

“The staff of MOH, the Immigration Department and other agencies at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex have been instructed to increase their monitoring,” she said.

Dr Wan Azizah also asserted that there was no need for a complete travel ban to and from China apart from three provinces (23 cities) which are under lockdown. – Bernama
