Over 42,000 senior citizens have applied for KGC

MUKAH: Some 42,973 Sarawakian senior citizens aged 60 and above have applied for the Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC) since Jan 31 this year.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development recently, the figure represented 12.8 per cent of the projected 334,500 senior citizens based on Sarawak Population Projection 2020.

Kuching Division topped the list with 11,502 applicants and they represented 11.1 per cent of the 2020 projected 103,600 senior citizens aged 60 years and above.

Sibu Division was the second highest with 5,967 applicants representing 13.8 per cent of the 43,200 projected senior citizens population.

The third highest was Miri Division with 4,433 applicants or 9.7 per cent of its 45,900 senior citizens projected population, followed by Betong Division (3,696 or 27.1 per cent of 13,600) and Limbang Division (3,287 or 31 per cent of 10,600).

Next was Sarikei Division with 3,214 applicants or 18.9 per cent of 17,000, followed by Sri Aman Division (2,582 or 19 per cent of 13,600), Kapit Division (2,106 or 14.2 per cent of 14,800), Bintulu Division (2,028 or 7.9 per cent of 25,800), Samarahan Division (1,852 or 9.2 per cent of 20,200), Mukah Division (1,645 or 11.5 per cent of 14,300) and Serian Division (661 or 5.6 per cent of 11,900).

The statistics were sent to the media through WhatsApp by the ministry’s staff during the presentation of the Sarawak Women and Family Department material grants to 40 recipients which was officiated by Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah in Dalat recently.
