KUCHING: Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) has assumed the role of gas transporter and aggregator in Sarawak effective this year following the sales and purchase of gas distribution business and assets in Miri and Bintulu.

Petroleum Sarawak Gas Sdn Bhd (Petros Gas), a subsidiary of Petros, is now the operator of Miri Gas Distribution System (MGDS) and Bintulu Gas Distribution System (BGDS). Both facilities were previously owned and operated by PETRONAS Gas Berhad (PGB), a subsidiary of Petronas.

Under a long term commercial arrangement with Petronas, Petros will purchase the natural gas feedstock from Petronas for onward sale to residential, commercial and industrial end users in Miri and Bintulu.

“Petros is now the single entity in Sarawak to sell and deliver domestic gas [via MGDS and BGDS] to homes, businesses and industries in Miri and Bintulu,” said Sarawak deputy chief minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said at the Sarawak Domestic Gas signing ceremony between Petros and Petronas held here yesterday.

“Today we have achieved the policy goal of the State’s Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016 for stewardship of her resources. And we welcome Petronas’ continued collaboration with Petros to strengthen Sarawak’s oil and gas sector and their firm commitment to a win-win outcome,” he said.

Meanwhile, Petronas President and CEO Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee said: “Today, we mark a new chapter with Sarawak. The partnership witnessed today reflects Petronas’ commitment to collaborate and support Sarawak State Government through its state-owned oil and gas company, Petros, in realising their ambition to be a more active player in its domestic oil and gas industry.”

He added that there are many more opportunities and milestones to be achieved in Petronas long-standing relationship with Sarawak.

“I am pleased to share that, in partnership with the Sarawak State Planning Unit, we have progressed with much momentum in the development of the Sarawak Petrochemicals Masterplan Study. The scope of the study includes gas monetisation options as part of our efforts to promote gas as a cleaner source of energy,
