SIBU: Residents of the 22-door Rh Dingon Megong, a longhouse at Sekuau Resettlement Scheme which was destroyed in a fire on Feb 10, yesterday received assistance from the Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKM).
The total donation of RM174,600 was handed over by Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
Speaking at the function, Fatimah explained that once an application for help was received through the JKM Selangau WhatsApp Group, the department would conduct an investigation to obtain detailed information about the fire victims for the management of assistance.
“Food assistance was also provided to the fire victims,” she added.
According to her, assistance from the state government including pocket money assistance, kitchen utensils, daily allowance, school supplies, and building materials of RM 5,000 was channeled through the JKM.
To help the victims, she said a relief centre was opened from February 10 to 16 for the convenience of receiving donations from any individual or party.
According to statistics from JKM, from January to February this year, a total of 35 fire cases involving 78 families and 364 victims were recorded in Sarawak.
