KUCHING: Eight mosques throughout the state have been instructed to close effective yesterday due the Covid-19 pandemic.
Assistant Minister in Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the closure was ordered by the State Health Department and Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) to allow sanitisation works at the mosques.
“Two mosques in Kuching, two in Kota Samarahan, one in Betong, one in Bintulu, one in Limbang and one in Serian,” he said at a press conference here at Darul Hana mosque yesterday.
He also said that the two mosques in Kuching had closed since Monday for cleaning and sanitising.
“Darul Hana Mosque and At-Taqwa Mosque in Kampung Pinang Jawa, Gita were closed effective Monday for sanitisation works.
“The decision was made after we received information from MIS that some of the mosque’s worshippers had attended the tabligh gathering programme at Sri Petaling mosque.
“We will update the information from time to time,” he added.
Abdul Rahman also urged those who had attended the religious gathering at Sri Petaling Mosque in Kuala Lumpur between Feb 27 and Mar 1 to immediately report themselves to the State Health Department and State Disaster Management Committee to test for Covid-19.
As of yesterday, eight people have tested positive for Covid-19. This brings the state’s number of positive cases to 42.
