KUCHING: The State Disaster Management Committee has praised Sarawakians who have complied with the movement control order issued by the government.

The order came into effect yesterday and will last until the end of the month in an effort to contain the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

Two lives have been lost to the pandemic in the country so far – one in Kuching and the other in Johor on Tuesday.

Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said it was vital that everyone observed the order.

“They need to cooperate with the government and be fully committed to eradicating the Covid-19 menace.

“Public compliance to the guidelines given by the Health Ministry, like practicing the highest standard of personal hygiene, social distancing and home quarantine, are the key factors to control the spread and transmission of Covid-19,” he said in a statememt yesterday.

“So, let us make the sacrifices to ensure the objective is achieved.”

Uggah stressed that the public needed to learn from countries such as China, Singapore and South Korea, in which the discipline and cooperation of their population (with the authorities) had led to the success in reducing the spread.

On the other hand, he said, in countries where there was a lack of preventative measures, the Covid-19 cases had escalated uncontrollably.

“Therefore, let us all cooperate. It is pertinent that we all work together in fighting this common enemy.”

Under the Movement Control Order, the police have been directed to enforce the directive and do surveillance in all public places.
