KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) involvement in the formalisation of Perikatan Nasional (PN) is meant to ensure political stability in Malaysia.
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said PN was a loose coalition or alliance of political parties set up with a common goal of working together to form the federal government.
“GPS has agreed to be in this loose coalition as it believes in the ideals, struggles and set-up of this coalition.
“We also want to ensure that political stability is in place in the country because prior to the formation of PN, there was a political impasse in Malaysia when former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad tendered his resignation,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.
He was elaborating on GPS’ role as one of the six signatories of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in support of PN. The MOU was signed last Sunday, one day prior to the parliamentary sitting.
The other five signatories were Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, Barisan Nasional, Parti Islam Se-Malaysia, Parti Bersatu Sabah and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku.
