KUCHING: Sarawak received a RM500,000 boost in its fight against Covid-19 from the Sarawak Oil Palm Plantation Owners Association (Soppoa) yesterday.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas received the cheque from Soppoa chief executive Andrew Cheng at his office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia, Petra Jaya here.

Cheng said Soppoa was appreciative of the sacrifices made by SDMC through relentless efforts to keep the public safe since the government implemented the movement control order (MCO) on March 18 until now.

“The donation is part of Soppoa’s community efforts to equip frontliners with the necessary PPE (personal protection equipment) in discharging their duties to save Covid-19 patients and to help families who are in dire need of food and medical assistance,” said Soppoa chairman Tiong Chiong Ong in a statement yesterday.

He said the donation was a contribution from Soppoa’s plantation companies and associates, who had been operating under strict guidelines and standard operating procedure (SOP) during the MCO.

Tiong assured that Covid-19 prevention advisory and SOP guidelines would continue to serve as the preferred SOP in the new norm.

Soppoa saluted all frontliners comprising government medical practitioners, security forces and volunteers who risked their lives daily to protect the public.

“Most notably and deserving of full commendation goes to the exemplary and able leadership of the SDMC team headed by Datuk Amar Uggah, which has shown wisdom, compassion and tolerance to all the people in the state by rendering assistance to those in need in a timely manner,” he added.
