KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) is committed to ensuring women are given equal opportunities to participate in politics.
PBB Women deputy chief Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said the trend on women running for political positions had significantly gained momentum in recent years.
“As a woman leader, it has always been our wish to see an increase in women participation in politics.
“From my personal experience, our top leaders have always wanted to increase the number of women in politics. PBB has never failed to place women as election candidates,” she said in the Orang Kamek Kafe programme streamed live over Sarawak Volunteers Facebook, on Tuesday night.
Rohani who is also Batang Lupar MP cited that women representation in the Malaysian Parliament now stands at 22 percent.
She described the appointment of two Sarawak women MPs in the federal cabinet proved that PBB had long recognised the importance of women leaders.
“When we talk about a party, it is about leadership and the collective effort.
“Such significant changes are made because of the openness of our leaders.
“PBB is fortunate because our leader, the state Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari has been working hard to push for more women’s participation,” she added.
Another panellist in the programme, Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang also agreed that PBB had always continued its tradition in introducing more women candidates for state and parliamentary elections.
She highlighted the recent appointment of Senator Datuk Seri Doris Brodie from PRS (Parti Rakyat Sarawak) as a huge milestone for GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak).
“I am confident this trend will continue to rise which definitely will give significant impact to our political development.
“We will continue to do our part to voice out on the need to put up more women candidates,” she said.
