KUCHING: The Sarawak government will provide a response to the Ministry of Environment and Water (Mewa) from time to time on the smoke haze in the state.
Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the haze was an international matter as it involved Sarawak, Indonesia, and Brunei, and hence it was the responsibility of the ministry.
“On Sarawak’s part, we will give our feedback on the current situation so that the ministry can forward and raise the matter to the committee as it observes the cross-border haze,” he said at a press conference on daily Covid-19 update here today.
Uggah said that all SDMC divisional committees were urged to always be prepared for such a natural occurrence especially in areas where fires occur frequently.
“They need to be prepared to control the fires and not repeat the same mistakes of the past. Fighting fires in peat soil areas is like stopping Covid-19 from spreading.
“We need to know where the smoke is and turn it off before it spreads. Like Covid-19, we make contact detection in one area and cut the chain from spreading to other places,” he added.
