Two missing in boat mishap

MARUDI: A teenage boy went missing after a boat he and four others boarded capsized on Saturday night in Long Mewah, Marudi.

The teenager, identified as Franky Setiawan Jena, 14, went missing along with Eduin Jala, 47, while the other three are safe.

According to Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre (PGO) in a statement on Saturday, that the boat hit a rock while on its way back to SK Long Aton that night.

The incident was believed to have been occurred around 9.30pm.

Prior to the mishap, earlier that day around 2.30pm, the men boarded the boat and embarked on their journey from SK Long Aton to a fishing spot located at a spot about 20 minutes from the school.

The victims were doing some repair works at SK Long Aton before going on their fishing trip.

“When the boat hit the rock on its way back that night, the victims managed to jump off the boat.

“The other three managed to swim to safety, but the two victims were swept away by strong currents, “said the statement.

Rescue operations have been mounted immediately to search for them.

For the record, it would take a 10-hour drive to reach Long Aton from Miri.
