MUKAH: Residents of Pulau Bruit, Daro — over 150km from here — will certainly be delighted as Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate at the earth-breaking ceremony of the Batang Paloh Bridge project in the island tomorrow.
They have been separated since time immemorial and the bridge, when completed in the next few years, will definitely facilitate their movement, and more importantly, help to improve their socio-economic life.
Meanwhile, come Sept 12, people in Matu and Daro will also be happy when Abang Johari will perform the same ceremony to the Igan Bridge project in Igan about 60km from here.
People in Matu and Daro in this division have been separated from Igan, Oya, Dalat and Mukah by Batang Igan, although the road to the two districts had been built some years ago.
Currently, people from the two sides of Batang Igan banks are using the ferry service to cross the river, which is about one kilometre wide.
Looking at the current development, it seems that the proposed Batang Igan Bridge is under the same package of the four-year completion schedule of the state bridge projects.
On June 11, Abang Johari after his walkabout at the construction site of Batang Saribas Bridge and Sungai Krian Bridge in Betong, told reporters that all bridge projects were expected to be completed by 2024.
When completed, these bridges would certainly boost connectivity and facilitate land transportation in Sarawak.
