SIBU: Jalan Langsat here is partially closed to facilitate drainage work.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting went to the ground to inspect the progress of the work on Saturday (August 22).

“I spoke to the contractors. They said the work is difficult, but they will try to complete it on time.”

“After laying the HDPE (high density polyethylene) pipes, I hope water from houses will flow better to the monsoon drain nearby.”

“I’ve walked around the neighbourhood. The blockage is due to a drain crossing constructed by house owners over the years,” he said.

According to Ting, walking or using the bicycle or motorcycle were the means of transportation for the people in the 70s, and when cars became popular, residents constructed their crossings without taking into account the drain below.

He said that over the years, the drain-clearing contractors had access problems and left it unserviced for so many years.

“I am going around to check on the drains. The task may be arduous, but the reward is great. The house owners may be able to keep their property without government intervention,” he said.
