SIMANGGANG: The downfall of the previous Pakatan Harapan (PH) federal government was caused by its own doing, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He stressed that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government had nothing to do with the downfall of PH.
“The then prime minister (Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad) submitted his resignation out of the blue, putting the country into a topsy-turvy situation earlier this year.
“PH governed the nation for 22 months. It brought the downfall upon itself,” he pointed out when speaking at Majlis Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat (Leaders with Community Ceremony) held at Hotel Seri Simanggang here on Monday (Aug 31).
Abang Johari was responding to remarks by some parties which questioned why GPS assisted current Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to get into power and topple PH.
“Malaysia, at that time, needed a government. The former prime minister stepped down of his own free will.
“We wanted to put a stop on the mayhem and thus, we gave our support to Muhyiddin so that the country would have a capable government to administer it,” he explained.
Abang Johari also explained that the formation of a new government was necessary after Dr Mahathir stepped down in view of the global pandemic Covid-19 crisis.
The chief minister advised Sarawakians to adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the government to curb the spread of Covid-19 transmission.
He advised those undergoing quarantine not to go out.
“This measure is necessary to protect ourselves and the people around us,” he added.
