KUCHING: Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (Tegas) aims to reach out to 150,000 or more students in Sarawak for the upcoming STEM Playground Virtual Fair.
Tegas chairman, Datuk Len Talif Salleh explained that the fair was a high impact-programme popular among schoolchildren and that it was being organised virtually for the first time due to the pandemic Covid-19.
“The fair will take place online since its first edition in 2016. It will roll out non-stop for 24/7 via the stemplayground.my website.
“As of now, it is considered to be the first and the biggest STEM virtual fair of its kind not only in Sarawak but in Malaysia,” he told a press conference at Menara Grand on Monday (Sep 14).
The event is organised by the state government through Tegas in collaboration with Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research (MESTR) and the State Education Department.
The theme of the fair will be ‘Discover, Create and Innovate’ as it aims to cultivate interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among students.
To be held from Sep 28 until Oct 4 this year, it comprises four segments, namely the official launching ceremony, STEM Fun Segment, STEM Facts Gallery, Stem Game and Challenge.
Tegas has also worked with a total of 21 strategic partners to help develop the contents.
Len said since a number of areas in Sarawak had weak internet connectivity, Tegas would help students in rural areas so that they could enjoy the contents, too.
“Students who enjoy good internet connectivity can access the fair online.
“But students who are living in rural areas with poor internet connectivity will be provided with pendrives so they can still enjoy similar contents,” he explained.
Len also urged the participants to provide feedback so that the event could be improved.
He also advised participants to pre-register as early as Sep 9, adding that registration was free.
Also present during the press conference were chief operating officer of Tegas, Awangku Merali Pengiran Mohamed, SMA representative, Michael Lu Yian Lock, MESTR representative, Zulkifli Ismail, State Education Department representative, Dr Raymond Maurice Stephen Bujang and SDEC representative, Natashya Evaristus.
