KUCHING: Hope Place, a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) based here, will have its virtual-style fundraising project.
According to a press statement, recently, Hope Place was approached by Miri Curtin University, and had come up with a proposal to help out in the fundraising project.
“Earlier this week, 19 students of the Faculty of Humanities, Department of Culture and Language Studies conduct an online interview with Kelvin Wan, founder of Hope Place.
“As part of their assignment in the Team Leadership and Community Service course, the students decided to do a virtual fundraising project as well as create awareness of community work,” the statement said.
In the interview, Wan shared Hope Place’s history, the services offered and some of his heart-warming experiences with the needy community.
Hope Place has been working together with a number of higher learning institutions throughout Malaysia since 2016.
The students of the institutions either participate as volunteers, for internship, fieldwork course, awareness talks or research.
“In the past, higher learning institutions like Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), UCSI University, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Sunway College, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Swinburne University, were involved in community and charity programmes with Hope Place.
“So far, more than 10 colleges and universities, as well as about 500 students have been exposed to community works, with their involvement with Hope Place,” the statement added.
Kelvin expressed his excitement upon knowing that although they are not able to physically do community work, these students uses online platform to involve themselves in charity to help the needy.
“We hope to expose students to day-to-day social work and to help them understand the community’s condition and needs.
“Hope Place encourages more of the younger generation to not only have the awareness but to be actively involved in community work,” Kelvin said.
