KUCHING: Sarawakians must learn to adapt and pivot into grabbing opportunities available in moving forward after Covid-19 pandemic.

Zuckerberg Media founder and chief executive officer, Randi Zuckerberg said that there were massive opportunities in e-commerce right now.

“During the lockdown period, there was a major spike in e-commerce that it actually accelerated e-commerce’s growth to five years ahead.

“Covid-19 didn’t stop the customers from shopping but instead, it just stopped customers from shopping in person. So, all the spending and shopping just moved online.

“This means it is time for you to boost up your e-commerce profiles and try new interesting ways to interact with customers online,” she said.

She also shared her experience in ‘trying out’ accessories online with the use of Augmented Reality (AR) by The Accessory Junkie which enabled customers to try on earrings from designers all over the world virtually.

She said this when delivering her virtual keynote presentation on ‘Artificial Intelligence (A.I) in the Gig Economy’ at the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2020 held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here on Wednesday (Oct 7).

Zuckerberg added that the pandemic also brought huge opportunities in logistics in the supply chains.

“The pandemic really highlighted the fact that so many industries relied on supplies from one foreign country and when the borders closed and the pandemic happened, they just could not get their products.

“So, we started to see the need to diversify local productions and for logistics to catch up with that. Thus, this is a huge opportunity right now to use technology to get into logistics and supply chains to make sure we are better prepared for another global crisis,” she added.

Zuckerberg also pointed out that during the pandemic, governments and global organisations around the world started to team up with big tech companies to use data for contact tracing and detection of potential Covid-19 carriers.

“From here, we start to see really interesting usage of AI, machine-learning and blockchains to help use all these big data in a way that it was good for public health and safety,” she elaborated.

Zuckerberg also pointed out that the people started to travel again after the lockdown but entertainment and leisure were not the same again.

She stressed that there had to be a renewed focus on health and safety over saving time and this would lead to changes in public transportation and tourism promotions.
