SIBU: Due to Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong’s high level of commitment, residents of Rumah Udam Tuah in Ulu Sungai Menyan near here will have a concrete bridge soon.
Wong, who is also the chairman of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong branch, said the new bridge would benefit its 26-door residents.
According to him, the current wooden bridge was built in the early 1980s which was only used to get to the longhouse.
“Now, most residents already have their own vehicles which are a necessity for them,” he said when visiting the site of the new bridge recently.
He said the residents of Rumah Udam have been applying to SRDC to build a new concrete bridge.
“With this they can park their vehicles in front of the longhouse instead of the opposite side of river bank and walk to the longhouse.
“The current bridge causes inconveniences to the residents, especially young children and the elderly if the weather is not good,” he added.
Since Wong was appointed as the deputy chairman of SRDC on August 1, he had discussed the implementation of this project with council chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai.
“Finally, with the help of the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing Dr Annuar Rapa’ee, the Sarawak Economic Planning Unit under the Chief Minister’s Department has approved an allocation of RM500,000 to build the bridge.
“The quotation process is expected to open in December,” he added.
