KAPIT: Member of Parliament for Hulu Rajang Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong calls for improvement in the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) results in his constituency
“I want all primary schools and secondary schools in Hulu Rajang constituency to improve in the public examinations,” he said when officiating at the prizes giving ceremony of ‘ASTRO Adoption of SK Sungai Paku’ programme at SMK Kapit 2 along Jalan Bletih here last Sunday.
While thanking ASTRO for adopting SK Sungai Paku, Ugak urged ASTRO not to just provide incentive for smart pupils only but also to organise motivation courses for teachers, parents and pupils on the importance of education.
“I see no reason why rural school cannot perform well. In fact, they should do even better than urban schools because the teachers are the same. They are all graduates and on top of that, the classes in rural schools are small compared classes in urban schools,” he said.
He also called on schools, teachers and Parent-Teacher Associations to sit down to discuss how best to improve students’ performance.
“Think out of the box to come up with solutions on how best to make students interested in learning. Teachers should be creative. I have observed students who do well are well-disciplined and hard working. Education is so important that it determines one’s future,” said Ugak
Also present were ASTRO public relationship officer Isa Ismail, administrative officer to Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, Robert Liman, Kapit Education Officer Kumbong Garit, SK Nanga Paku headmaster Gudang Kemarau, teachers and parents.
