KUCHING: Budget 2021 should take into account internet connectivity and online teaching and learning facilities for urban and rural areas throughout Sarawak.

This was said by Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) president Macky Joseph, who said this includes providing widespread internet coverage as well as high speed data for teachers and students to conduct online teaching and learning.

“Education is for all. Thus, a special allowance in the form of internet data for teachers and students would go a long way,” he said in a statement issued on Sunday (Nov 1).

Macky said STU also hopes the Budget would consider the safety and health of teachers when carrying out their duties in schools amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Some form of subsidised insurance protection scheme for teachers would be appreciated during this difficult time.

“Teachers are actually performing two frontline duties; by enabling continuous education through various platforms as well as ensuring that students abide by the standard operating procedures (SOPs),” he explained.
